Jason Kovack won the Molson Master's title. Jason Kovack defeated Dan Aqwa 234-159 to win the Molson Master's title at the Bowlero Saturday. Kovack, a two time member of team Canada, had to win four games to etch his name on the now 55 year old trophy. He first defeated Steven Walls Jr, 213-142 before advancing to a 229-217 over London's Ryan Trussler and then an exciting 253-251 victory over James Gendreau in the semi final.
In a touching tribute to the tournament's rich history, 1958 champ Andy Garlatti and 1960 winner Joe Beaulieu presented the trophy to Kovack. The turning point of the afternoon may have actually come in the semi-final match. Gendreau finished the match, needing a strike in the 9th and then two in the tenth plus 9 to win the match. He was able to get the first three strikes, only to manage 6 pins on the final ball, losing 254-251. "The match against James was probably the best match I've ever bowled." Kovack reflected, "When we started the game and (Gendreau) said he wanted to finish, that kind of surprised me and I knew, hey this guy wants to bowl!" For Aqwa it was a bittersweet moment since this was 8th trip to the finals but he is still without a title. "I'm the Dan Marino of the Molson's" he joked. Randy Neels won the Molson Master's Senior title at the Bowlero on Saturday, defeating two-time defending champ Jack Jaksic 244-188. Neels won the semi-final match 226-188 over Mark Morand, who had won the first match 201-178 over Robert Ellis Jr.
Neels had averaged an impressive 219 during the match play segment of the tournament only to average 235 in his two matches on the way to championship. He revealed after the win that he was playing injured, saying "I was nursing a sore ankle. I had to skip bowling in my league this week and hoped I'd be okay for today." 48 teams turned out for the Baker's tournament on February 2th, which resulted in a competitive field and a nice prize list.
It was the father-son team of Cham and Darin Deschaine who took the thousand dollar top prize by defeating Dan Aqwa and Randy Hilliar in the final match. Just as the rest of the tournament, the final match was highly competitive and went right down to the last shot.

Other top finishers included: Steve Hunter and Larry Ritchie; Charlie Yott and Jeff Colombe; Steve Sherle and Tom Ferrand; Wayne Dunning and Bill Marshall; Matt Robert and Steve Walls Jr.; Al Lameroux and Stephen Morand; Jason Heron and Carmine Perrone; Dave Carpenter and David Thomas; Matt Grimmel and Alex Trpkovski; Dan Corchis and Wayne Weatherbie; Tom Breen and Mike Forfitt; Blaine Rankin and Bill Clinansmith; Kevin Baker and Dan Dumouchelle and Mark Willis and Jeremy Garent.
The 48 entries bowled 8 games of qualifying across 8 pairs of lanes at which time the field was cut to the top 16. Under fairly demanding lane conditions, the scores were very reasonable and the cut ended up at 1465, an average of just 183.
"The condition was not what I would characterize as difficult but rather not easy." Jonathan Brown tournament co director said. "Afterall" he added, "the whole point of a tournament is to award a deserving champion; to determine which is the best team. To do that you have to do more than see who carries the most strikes in a wide open pocket. We have seen today that simply keeping the ball around the pocket and good spare shooting are among the keys so success."
Although most of the feedback was positive, there were some useful suggestions made regarding both the conditioning pattern as well as the prize list. "several bowlers complimented the format, but definitely a different payout ratio and a more rapid elimination are things worth looking at." Added Rachel Cohen, tournament co director.
Another Baker's date will be announced for sometime between the end of the Molson Master's and the start of the international Moose tournament.
