“Second Weekend of Master's Qualifying Complete” Molson Master's Match Play Groupings Set
A mix of new names join familiar faces in this year's Molson Master's match play all vying for the $2000.00 top prize. Joining last year's champion Todd Sim in group 'A' is Chad Matchett (1119), Omar Arabi (1086), Kevin Baker 1066), Jason Heron (1045), Steve MacLelland (1034), Tony Peralta (1020) and Ryan Boismier (1006). This group is highlighted by an interesting mix of players, ranging from the smooth left handed stroke of Peralta to the veteran Baker to two finalists from last year in MacLelland and Sim. "There are a few dangerous ones in that group" noted one interested observer. Omar Arabi is a fine young player who has been on the cusp of breaking through for several seasons now while a player like Boismier could easily be this year's version of Douglas Scott who was a finalist who was perhaps overlooked by some at the outset of match play. Group 'B' is Led by high qualifier Dan Aqwa (1276) along with Rick Vittone (1112), Adam Grimmell (1082), Jason Kovack (1066), Chad Neale (1043), Patrick Lacasse (1029), Chris Woodman (1019) and Steve Hunter (1003). Kovack will look to return to the final round for the second consecutive year. Vittone, a well practiced and a tournament veteran will be considered a front runner as well. Neale, LaCasse and Woodman are all match play rookies while Hunter looks to build on a career season with a television appearance.
Toronto native Jason Dee (1162) leads group 'C' but he will be challenged by the likes of Doug Kaczmarski (1096), Mark Dufour ( 1080), Kevin Trainor (1059), Mike Firsht (1043), Brad Clarke (1026), Chuck Menard (1017) and Pete Berthiaume (1002). Kaczmarski has been bowling well recently with a pair of perfect games in league play. Dufour was the Master's champion in 1996 and he would love to get back to the show. Should Firsht win the group, it would be his fifth consecutive finals appearance. Group 'D' is led by 2006 Champion Jim Creasor (1162). Battling it out for a spot on the show will include; Marty Sanders (1094), David Iorio (1079), Wayne Weatherbie (1059), Gary Hooper Jr. (1037), Chris Moxley (1025), Aaron Bratt (1016) and Mike Snow (1002). Sanders is a skilled left hander who has the potential to post big scores at any time. Iorio is another tournament veteran who was a finalist in 2000. Weatherbie makes only his second appearance in match play while Hooper Jr. looks to return to the finals for a second consecutive season. Moxley and Bratt are both making their first appearance in match play while Snow hopes to add to his hall of fame resume.
Group 'E' might be as wide open as any of the five. Leading the way is Matt Grimmell (1125) followed by; Barry Charlton (1090), Jason Gendreau (1068), Douglas Scott (1047), Chad Mrkonjic (1037), Steve Kubis (1024), Steve Walls Jr. (1014) and Jay Krutcsh (999). Charlton was the second highest lefty in the field who had a strong showing last year. Gendreau makes his match play debut while Scott seeks to make a repeat appearance in the finals. Walls Jr. possesses one of the most impressive physical games of any of the tournament bowlers and he is hoping that will amount to a trip to the show this year. Mrkonjic, Kubis and Krutch all hope to be in contention during the critical final matches on the 1st. Master's Division Match Play Groupings Lou Dupuis will defend his title as part of Group 'A' along with Bernie Renaud, Ed Ropac and John Naccarato. Group 'B' is lead by former Champion Don Owchar. Chasing Owchar will be Don Gilbert, Joe Ondic and Donna Lloyd. In group 'C' it will be Jack Jaksic, Fred Tiller, Gary Ferlecki and Len Robitaille battling it out for a spot in the finals. Finalist from a year ago Paul Lefrancoise is joined by Mike Chichkan, Larry Scratch and Dan Corchis. 2008 Molson Masters Results: Past Champions: |

48 teams turned out for the Baker's tournament on February 2th, which resulted in a competitive field and a nice prize list.
It was the father-son team of Cham and Darin Deschaine who took the thousand dollar top prize by defeating Dan Aqwa and Randy Hilliar in the final match. Just as the rest of the tournament, the final match was highly competitive and went right down to the last shot.

Other top finishers included: Steve Hunter and Larry Ritchie; Charlie Yott and Jeff Colombe; Steve Sherle and Tom Ferrand; Wayne Dunning and Bill Marshall; Matt Robert and Steve Walls Jr.; Al Lameroux and Stephen Morand; Jason Heron and Carmine Perrone; Dave Carpenter and David Thomas; Matt Grimmel and Alex Trpkovski; Dan Corchis and Wayne Weatherbie; Tom Breen and Mike Forfitt; Blaine Rankin and Bill Clinansmith; Kevin Baker and Dan Dumouchelle and Mark Willis and Jeremy Garent.
The 48 entries bowled 8 games of qualifying across 8 pairs of lanes at which time the field was cut to the top 16. Under fairly demanding lane conditions, the scores were very reasonable and the cut ended up at 1465, an average of just 183.
"The condition was not what I would characterize as difficult but rather not easy." Jonathan Brown tournament co director said. "Afterall" he added, "the whole point of a tournament is to award a deserving champion; to determine which is the best team. To do that you have to do more than see who carries the most strikes in a wide open pocket. We have seen today that simply keeping the ball around the pocket and good spare shooting are among the keys so success."
Although most of the feedback was positive, there were some useful suggestions made regarding both the conditioning pattern as well as the prize list. "several bowlers complimented the format, but definitely a different payout ratio and a more rapid elimination are things worth looking at." Added Rachel Cohen, tournament co director.
Another Baker's date will be announced for sometime between the end of the Molson Master's and the start of the international Moose tournament.
